Buildings (as abstractions)
As is seen in Category 8, there are times
in assembling the reality of the street when abstract glimpses enter into
a passer-by's eyes. Like the street itself, buildings themselves must also
be constructed from the raw visual material of shapes, colors, and
contrasts.
At these moments, the building is removed from its social context. In the
glimpses below, there is no memory of any signs, windows, markings,
doorways,
or awnings that would enable this building to be seen within the social
setting where it normally resides. It is reduced to a series of lines,
and the lines themselves bear no resemblance to anything recognizable that
one would associate with a building. This means that at least a fraction
of our vision is dominated by abstractions; just as we are the street (in
so far as we construct it) so are we the buildings.
